A Rollercoaster Ride in Las Vegas

From 2001 to 2014, the Las Vegas entertainment scene had a constant headliner that defied conventions. The Amazing Johnathan was the name on everyone’s lips. His act was a delightful blend of hijinks, audience interaction, and a touch of legitimate magic tricks. Dressed in his trademark headband, he pushed the boundaries with his performances, often using elements of gore to shock and entertain. His fearless acts, like pretending to suck on his hanging eyeball, cutting his wrists, and skewering his tongue, set him apart in the world of comedy and magic. He even shared a close friendship with fellow performer Criss Angel, collaborating on various illusions and making three guest appearances on Angel’s Mindfreak.

Always Amazing: A Story of Friendship and Resilience

“Always Amazing” is not just a title but a testament to the indomitable spirit of The Amazing Johnathan. It’s a story that intertwines his illustrious career as a comedian and magician with an unlikely friendship formed during a tour in Australia. Amidst the glitz and glamour of showbiz, an unfortunate terminal diagnosis rekindled the bond, setting the stage for one last series of unforgettable performances. This story serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that even in the face of uncertainty and despair, one can be always amazing.

The Man Behind the Magic

John Edward Szeles was born on September 9, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan, to Doreen and Edward Szeles. In the 1970s, he made a life-altering decision to relocate to California, where he commenced his career by performing on the vibrant streets of San Francisco. Szeles made his television debut in 1983 on “The 8th Annual Young Comedians Show” and later hosted the short-lived 1991 syndicated variety/game show “Ruckus.” His charisma and talent earned him appearances on various talk and variety shows from the mid-1980s to the mid-2000s. Notably, he made several appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman” and a record-breaking 24 appearances on Fox’s “Comic Strip Live.” His humor was also showcased in Comedy Central specials, including “Comedy Central Presents” and “Lounge Lizards.” He dedicated one of his specials to his Uncle Eugene, the man responsible for introducing him to his first card trick and, as Johnathan humorously puts it, “starting this whole mess.” In addition, he made a memorable appearance in the 2005 documentary “The Aristocrats.”

Legacy and Beyond

Johnathan’s success extended beyond the United States. His popularity in Australia soared after appearances on Channel 9’s “Hey Hey It’s Saturday.” Not only a performer, but he also shared his knowledge in a how-to book on practical jokes titled “Every Trick in the Book.” The book is a treasure trove of classic practical jokes, magic tricks, and his own original material in both categories. Moreover, Szeles embarked on an endeavor that combined his love for classic car collecting and drive-in movie theaters, opening the “Amazing Underground” in 2008. This members-only indoor drive-in, nestled within his Las Vegas warehouse, offered a unique cinematic experience.

In 2011, Szeles was in the spotlight, performing regular shows in Las Vegas at the Harmon Theater while also taking select dates across the United States and in Australia. He bagged numerous awards, including “Best Comedian” from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “Comedian of the Year” from Nevada Magazine, and recognition as one of the “Top Ten Acts in Vegas.” He held the record as the longest-running and most successful solo comic magician in U.S. history.

In 2013, Johnathan ventured into the world of online talk shows with “Burn Unit.”

John Edward Szeles left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment, captivating audiences with his irreverent humor and astonishing magic. While his health challenges posed significant obstacles, his unwavering determination allowed him to triumph over adversity and return to the stage, proving that, like The Amazing Johnathan himself, anyone has the potential to be “always amazing.”
